Gunman Kills Pastor at Illinois Church

The state police said the man spoke briefly with Fred Winters, the pastor at First Baptist Church in Maryville, Ill., near St. Louis, before pulling out a .45-caliber handgun and fatally shooting Mr. Winters four times before the gun jammed, The Associated Press reported.

Pope to visit Holy Land in May

Pope Benedict XVI greets the faithful during the Angelus noon prayer in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Sunday March 8, 2009. The Pontiff says he will visit the Holy Land on May 8-15 in the first papal trip to the area since 2000. Cranach masterpiece stolen from Norwegian church

OSLO (Reuters) - Thieves broke into a church in Norway and stole a valuable 16th century painting by the German Renaissance master Lucas Cranach the Elder, police said on Sunday.One or more thieves climbed a ladder and broke a window to enter the church at Larvik, south of Oslo, and stole the painting in the early hours of Sunday, police officer Petter Aronsen said.

Hierarchs from Orthodox states attend church service in Moscow

MOSCOW, March 8 (Itar-Tass) -- Diplomats and hierarchs from Orthodox countries attended the Feast of Orthodoxy at the Savior Cathedral in Moscow on Sunday. The feast is celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent by the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholics of the Byzantine Rite to commemorate the return of icons to the churches.

Vatican backs abortion row bishop

A senior Vatican cleric has defended the excommunication in Brazil of the mother and doctors of a young girl who had an abortion with their help. The nine-year-old had conceived twins after alleged abuse by her stepfather.

Resurgent Georgian Church sees influence soar

TBILISI (AFP) — When the head of Georgia's Orthodox Church offered to become godfather to every third child born to a family last year, the response was nothing short of miraculous.Birth rates among Georgian families soared by nearly 20 percent and within a year the patriarch, Ilia II, had presided over enough mass baptisms to become godfather to more than 2,000 children.
